Google Home Max smart speaker is now available in the UK

The Home Max is packed with two tweeters (0.7in) and two dual voice-coil woofers (4.5in). It’s hard to recommend a smart speaker over a dedicated home audio setup or any other Bluetooth speakers, but the Google Home Max has weaved its way into my life in a way other products haven’t. I admit, I’m already in the group of people that use a Google Home, but that’s mainly for setting alarms, timers, and asking it questions while I cook.

It sounds good enough to act as a mini Hi-Fi, Google Assistant feels responsive and the large screen lets you watch YouTube while you cook. Thanks to its display properties, it's also one of the best digital photo frames you can buy right now. We'd like to have seen track navigation controls onboard—you'll be skipping tracks either on your phone itself or with the power of your voice and Google Assistant. But there's no reason to exclude them from the design if you're choosing to include volume and playback controls.

An analogue 3.5mm line-in socket and USB-C port round out the back, alongside the figure-of-eight power cable. There’s also Bluetooth for streaming your music directly from a phone, tablet or computer if you need to. White dots in the centre of the fabric front show when the Home Max is actively listening to you, when it’s working on a query or speaking to you, or shows the volume level when you adjust it. But Google Assistant is terrific as a whole-home system. It can recognize up to six different voices for different Google accounts, synchronize music between rooms, and even broadcast messages to all of the Google Home devices in your home.

It’s near-perfect for audio, but video could be improved. What you can actually stream to these screens is limited. The software the Google Nest Hub Max uses is not like Android. There’s no homescreen of apps to tap and it cannot stream video from Netflix. While you can link the speaker to your Netflix account in the Google Home app, it simply refuses to play any Netflix content when you ask it to.

Designed to appeal to audiophiles, the Home Max pack dual 4.5-inch high-excursion woofers and two custom 0.7-inch tweeters and is 20 times more powerful than the original Home, according to the search giant. Google is finally bringing the largest and most powerful member of the Home smart speaker family, the Google Home Max, to the U.K… for a whopping 399 pounds. The Home Max can also play in multi-room audio groups with other Google Home or Chromecast devices, which makes filling your whole house with the same music easy.

This beast of a smart speaker is intended to be both a Google Home device and a luxurious speaker capable of outputting some serious sound. The Google Nest Hub Max has some slight issues at launch. Nest platform support is not quite there yet in our experience and the volume control needs an update to make up for the extra power on offer. This speaker is much more powerful than the Google Home Hub, and deserves more fine-grain control.

Features and audio performance

Without Nest Aware, any clips disappear after 24 hours. You can also check out the live view of your Google Nest Hub Max from anywhere without the subscription. You will also need to install the Nest app if you want to use the Google Nest Hub Max’s camera properly, though. Nest was one of the original smart home pioneers in the current wave, which made home automation cheap and accessible, and was bought by Google back in 2014. The Nest Hub Max also has a front-facing camera, and can plug into the Google-owned Nest platform to act as a smart home camera.

Google has also renamed the original Home Hub to bring it into the Nest family. Google is finally bringing the largest and most powerful member of the Home family to the U.K… for a whopping 399 pounds. It seemed most at home with pop tracks such as In My Feelings by Drake or Anywhere by Rita Ora. The top of the Google Home Max has a touch-sensitive strip that acts as a pause-play button and a volume slider. It can be stood up vertically or placed horizontally with a little rubber foot that attaches to the bottom magnetically. When horizontal the hidden touch strip on top acts as a pause-play button and a volume slider, both of which work well.

Without downloading or installing any software. The converted and downloaded files are kept the same quality and content as YouTube's. Yt5s.io is a tool to help you download video from Youtube to your computer for free. In addition, Yt5s also supports converting to many different formats and qualities for download. We would not suggest getting rid of your Hi-Fi and replacing it with this. It’s not as muscular as the Google Home Max and the mids are not as well fleshed-out as those of the Sonos One.

You can think of this as an alternative to Skype or Apple’s FaceTime. There’s an interesting extra feature that makes use of the camera’s wide-angle display too; Auto Framing. We had some trouble with this side of the Google Nest Hub Max. While it recorded clips, the app consistently said the camera was “offline” when we tried to have a peek at the live view. We were also unable to access the camera directly, from the touchscreen. That’s right, the Google Nest Hub Max can’t find its own camera.

Easily check your live camera streams and video history with the new timeline or dedicated events view. If you’re like me and need to be reminded of basic facts throughout the day, the Google Assistant still gives the best answers out of any personal assistant and it’s only getting better with time. Google boasts the gadget is 20 times more powerful than the original Google Home and louder to boot, with the ability to "fill the largest room" in your pad with music. We’ll have a review unit in from Google shortly so we can offer up a true full review for you in the coming days. Our first impression is that £399 is a lot to pay, and with the amount of competition in the market already, Google really has to be able to deliver on sound quality in a way that its rivals can’t.

You install Google Home on your phone, agree to a small army of terms and conditions screens, and you’re done. Swipe down from the top of the screen and you’ll see the shortcuts panel. Swipe from the bottom and the settings panel appeals. There’s not too much to do here, in terms of touchscreen interaction. The Google Nest Hub Max’s behavior in low light probably couldn’t, though.
